April Verch's website

April Verch is a dynamic Canadian fiddler, singer and step-dancer who has emerged as one of the top female artists in the roots music genre today. With her band, she plays a traditional and original repertoire that is deeply rooted in the style she grew up with in the Ottawa Valley region of Ontario.

Vintage Guitar declares “her style, technique and sheer virtuosity rivals anyone who’s ever held a bow" adding that "Verch brings a unique mix of old-fashioned and modern sensibilities to make every song special.” The Hartford Courant describes April's voice as "pretty and pristine," while Raleigh News and Observer declares she is "one of the most versatile artists of traditional music's new breed." "Given the sweet ring of her voice, the energy and uniqueness of her dancing and live performance, and recent comparisons to fellow fiddlers Natalie MacMaster and Alison Krauss," praises the Charlotte Observer, "Verch could be headed for the mainstream."

April recorded her first two self-released albums and was touring full time by the time she finished high school. She studied at Boston's Berklee College of Music and simultaneously captured two fiddling championships – Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion and Canadian Open Fiddle Champion. Between 2001 and 2006 April recorded three albums with Rounder Records, working with Bruce Molsky and Dirk Powell as producers on the latter two recordings with the label.

April's newest recording, Steal the Blue (Slab Town Records, 2008), is her 7th and first to showcase her soulful, "ethereal" (Sun Chronicle) vocals. Co-produced by Stephen Mougin of the Sam Bush Band and Jon Weisberger, Steal The Blue features April’s touring band alongside familiar names like Tim Stafford, Larry Cordle, Ron Block, Melonie Cannon, and Travis Book among the songwriters, harmony vocalists and instrumentalists. This recording project demonstrates April's continuing development as an artist and how she's "carved out her own niche in contemporary acoustic music." (Bluegrass Unlimited)

The April Verch Band consists of April at the helm and world-class musicians Clay Ross on guitar and Cody Walters on upright-electric bass and banjo. They deliver richly textured traditional roots tunes, bluegrass and newgrass melodies, jazz-influenced compositions, and country music. "Our performances are a really good mix of dancing, playing and singing with something for everybody so that it’s the most entertaining it can be," says April. The April Verch Band tours tirelessly across Canada, the United States, the U.K., Europe and just recently wrapped a 6-week debut tour of Australia. They have established a reputationas consummate performers with boundless energy on stage that inevitably brings audiences to their feet.

Fans may also have also seen Verch perform in 2008 with Bowfire, a tour featuring the top virtuoso violinists and fiddlers that continues this fall.
